A Message from the Board of Directors

Spindrift School of Performing Arts exists to serve our community: every child, every family, and every artist who walks through our doors. It is our mission to provide a caring, safe space for students to learn, develop, and grow as performing artists. We require that every member of our team uphold this commitment.

This summer, we’ve had the joy of welcoming many new and familiar faces to our programs and celebrating our students’ creativity and growth. We are grateful to the families and teaching artists who have brought so much energy and dedication to our camps, classes, and productions. As we look ahead to the fall, we’re excited to launch new classes and share an incredible lineup of performances.

We also want to acknowledge an important matter that remains active. In late spring, the Board of Directors became aware of a situation involving suspected abuse that was not reported by a mandated reporter. As required by California Penal Code §11166, anyone designated as a mandated reporter must report suspected abuse immediately. There is no gray area. You do not wait, investigate, or delay. You report.

Upon learning that a report had not been made, the Board took immediate action:

  • The individual involved was immediately removed from the school.
  • A mandated report was filed with the appropriate authorities, and follow-up information has been provided as requested.
  • An outside law firm was engaged to conduct an impartial review, and three independent legal opinions were obtained before any leadership decisions were made.

The matter reported has since resulted in criminal charges. The investigation into the broader circumstances, including questions related to mandated reporting, is still active and we continue to cooperate fully with the authorities.

We understand that many in our community care deeply about this issue and want more details. However, we are not at liberty to share specifics involving a minor or ongoing personnel matters, and we will not comment publicly on an active investigation.

We are also aware of attempts to shift responsibility away from mandated reporters or diminish the seriousness of the situation. The law is clear: once you become aware of suspected abuse, you must report. No exceptions. No blame-shifting. No delays. Our responsibility is to the safety of our students, the well-being of our families, and the integrity of our programs. That responsibility continues to guide every decision we make.

Spindrift is a community of passionate teachers, staff, board members, and families who believe in the transformative power of the performing arts. Our Board remains fully engaged in supporting this transition and ensuring the highest standards of safety, accountability, and care are upheld.

Classes are continuing. Rehearsals are moving forward. The shows will go on. We remain focused on what we do best:

Training and inspiring students of all ages in the performing arts while instilling confidence, self-discipline, creativity, and respect for others.
